Seal Soul Album Review
First, thank you guys for all your e-mails. I didn’t want to write any review for the Seal Soul Album as it is not cover his own material.
Now let’s be clear here, If you’re looking for the typical Seal vocal performance, you won’t find it here. I loved Seal because he is an innovator - constantly pushing the genre boundaries of classic pop music, r 'n' b and even dance music but not only with his voice but with the over all music production of his album.
I have no problem with Seal doing covers of classic soul music - I really loved his cover of "Walk on By" – I was just wondering why couldn't he have done something fresh with the sound. I may be a little bias here as all of you reading my reviews known my preference for what I consider like his best producer : Trevor Horn.
I was hoping to get more of his original sound and music but this album is the true definition of Soul through a wonderful sampling music that tells the story of the way it was.
That said, the power, the sincerity and the conviction of his voice is indisputably great in Soul Album, it’s almost natural for him to sing soul music -- where passion and conviction are prerequisites.
Seal has the right voice even if he rarely diverts far from the original arrangements.
My favorite one is “Free” Seal’s cover of Denice Williams’ 1977 hit. Everything aligns better here. One can feel the typical Seal vocal performance of the previous albums. And maybe because this song is less known compared to the other songs, and probably because be singing by a man, covering a woman song, Seal puts a more definitive stamp on his cover without mimeographing the original.
Soul is a disc that you really want to like, Seal is an amazing talent with legendary material and a superb deliver and is an overall success because of Seal's caressing vocals and obvious knowledge of how to interpret these songs faithfully.
This CD is great. I love most of the songs. Although the songs were originally recorded by other artist, Seal has put his special spin on each song and definitely does a great job with these songs.
I think if you are a Seal fan, you will love it because this CD brings back memories.
SEAL REVISITED NOTE : 7/10
